Jerry Cunningham is the Fine Arts Chairman at Tallassee High School where his responsibilities include coordinating a program with over 200 students in five choirs, and being in charge of producing the annual Fall Musical and Capital City Classic competition.

                From 1990-1997 Mr. Cunningham was the choral director at Auburn High School in Auburn,AL. where he developed the program from a part-time program with 30 students to a full-time program with over 250 students and two full-time choral directors. During his tenure the Auburn High School Choral Department became one of the top programs in the southeast, winning several state and regional competitions as well as a national competition in Orlando,Florida. His choirs received unanimous superior ratings at the state choral festival for six consecutive years and his choirs have been invited to perform for the Alabama Music Educators’ Conference, the Alabama Vocal Association and the Alabama Choral Directors’ Association. During this period Mr. Cunningham also served as a faculty member of the Auburn University Music Department where he taught voice and directed the University of Men’s and Women’s Choruses. Other responsibilities included serving as the Assistant Minister of Music at Lakeview Baptist Church in Auburn and serving as Minister of Music at East Tallassee Baptist Church.

                Mr. Cunningham also spends time writing numerous arrangements for choirs. He has had a number of his choral arrangements performed by various high school choirs in state and regional competitions. In 1994 his arrangement for women’s choir, O Jesu Christe, was performed at the Southern Division Choral Director’s Convention in Knoxville,Tennessee.  

                As an educator, Mr. Cunningham was named the Outstanding Teacher in 1995 by the Auburn City Schools.  He was awarded the WSFA Class Act Award in 1994 and 2000, and was recognized by the Alabama PTA Organization as one of the state’s top educators in 1995. He was also selected as WTLS Radio’s Man of the Year for 2006.  Jerry Cunningham received his M.M.E. and B.S. from Auburn University and has completed partial course work toward his Ph.D. at Auburn University. He is a 1978 graduate of Tallassee High School.

                Mr. Cunningham has served as the state president of the Alabama Choral Director’s Association and served for over two decades on the state board of the Alabama Vocal Association, retiring in 2018. His professional memberships include the American Choral Directors’ Association, the Music Educators’ National Conference, the Alabama Vocal Association, and the Phi Kappa Phi honorary fraternity.

                Mr. Cunningham is married to Donna Spivey who teaches at Tallassee Elementary School. They have three children, Jordan, Peyton, and Madison. Jerry and Donna have been actively involved in various community activities including Dixie Youth Baseball.  He is the Golf Coach at THS.  Mr. Cunningham has a granddaughter named Paisley.  "Mr. C" is currently serving as the Executive Director of the Greater Tallassee Chamber of Commerce and is also the Chancel Choir Director at First United Methodist Church in Tallassee.

                Sunday, April 29, 2018 was named Jerry Cunningham Day in Tallassee by proclamation of the Mayor and City Council for his contributions to music in the state of Alabama, and the city of Tallassee in particular.
